VACANCY ADS
Equal Status Sought
An attempt was beng made to “de-sex” the Christchurch newspapers by getting them to advertise all job vacancies in one general column, instead of putting them under male and female headings, a meeting of the Canterbury Committee of the Council of Equal Pay and Opportunity was told on Thursday. This method was used in Wellington newspapers, also in New York, said Mr B. Alderdice, secretary of the Shop Assistants’ Union.
So far both newspapers in Christchurch had refused to change the present system of job classification by sex, but if they could be persuaded to do so it would be a move towards equal opportunity for women. If an employer wanted both men and women to apply for a job he had to advertise in both columns as the general column was too small, he said. The chairman of the committee (Mrs Mary Batchelor) said that she agreed that job classification should be on the worth of the applicant rather than the sex.
