Australian Markets Close On Unsettled Note
Share prices ended the week on a distinctly unsettled note on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, with most mining issues turning back after a firm start.
Early trading was active and a selection of stocks continued Thursday’s advance. However, by mid-morning buying support appeared to have been soaked up, and on listless trading a gradual drift developed. Oils and industrials closed with a smattering of gains, but in most cases they, too, were below the best. Poseidon fell sharply after an early gain, closing 1800 c down at 21,200 c—its lowest point for more than a month. Tasminex fell steadily all day, although it closed off the bottom at 1300 c for a loss of 300 c on the day. The established miners were mixed, bu_t mostly in retreat. Beach attracted buying support, and gained 30c to 380 c. Among the industrials, B-H.P. closed unchanged at 1585 c after another day of active trading, while Colonial Sugar rose 4c to 724 c. Bank of New South Wales improved 10c and Slater Walker added sc, at 485 c. SYDNEY Sales.— Amal. Chem,, 37: Ampol. Pet., 100: Ansett, 86: A.W.A., 185; Ass.
