The Wairau women’s pair. M. Hegglun and A. Kundycki, captured the first national title of the 1970 New Zealand rowing championships yesterday, with a three-length victory over Auckland University and Wakatipu No. 2.

It was the first of twoi finals raced yesterday, the Hamilton No. 2 crew later winning the women’s novice fours. Elimination heats and semifinals completed the programme, and all other finals will be raced today. In the women's pairs. University was fast away from the stake boat, and at the 1000-metre mark held a halflength lead over Wakatipu No 1. Wairau lengthened its strikes and at 750 metres had overtaken Auckland University. with Wakatipu half a length back, and went into a comfortable victory.
