Loop Railway
Sir, —It is almost a year since the Minister of Railways announced that priority would be given to the development of the Belfast loop and the removal of the present line which runs through Papanui, Fendalton, etc Many residents whose homes line the tracks in these areas were hoping for some early relief from the nightly disturbances occasioned, by the rail traffic and would be grateful if you could discover what the intentions of the department are in the matter.— Yours, etc., a
G. February 16, 1970. [The Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) replies: “Railways Department officers have been working on defining the centre-line of the proposed loop railway, and this work is nearly completed. The next step will be to obtain the agreement of the local bodies concerned and to carry out the formal gazetting of the proposed route. It is not possible at the present time to say just when actual construction of the line will commence or whether it will be possible to remove a portion of the present main line. This will be the subject of further investigation by the department.")
