Seats For Public At Parliament Opening
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 24. Allocations for the 140 seats available to the public at the opening of Parliament by the Queen on March 13 were balloted today, and invitations will be sent to successful persons.
Space at the opening will largely be taken up by officials, the Clerk of the House of Representatives (Mr H. N. Dollimore), said tonight. About 1000 persons could be accommodated on the steps leading into the building and in the members’ lounge. Applications had been received from more than 400 members of the public, and invitations would be sent to those successful in the ballot, as well as to diplomats, members of Parliament and their wives and other officials. Mr Dollimore said that the
members’ lounge would accommodate 140 persons, 40 of whom would be members of the public. They would see the opening on closed-circuit television.
There was room for 200 on the steps and the remaining 100 members of the public would see the arrival and departure of the Queen from there.
Most of the public applications for invitations had come from the Wellington area.
This was the third time space available to the public had been allocated by ballot.
