ADDINGTON MARKET Breeding Ewes And Store Lambs Ease

Two-tooth ewes met a better inquiry- at the Addington market yesterday, but store lambs and adult ewes were easier.

Although fine-woolled two-tooth ewes showed no rise in value, the sale was freer throughout. Romney two-tooths, of which some top quality ewes were included, had a better sale than comparable sheep at Little River fair on Tuesday.

Store lambs had an easier sale, apart from a very small selection of the top lots. But for the buying interest from the Methven district and also some competition from two Otago and a Waimate buyer, the sale would have slipped into the doldrums. The adult sheep section was made up of a mixed collection of plain one-year ewes and they sold accordingly. Values were easier on recent rates. The store sheep yarding was 26.450, compared with 43,445 last week, and consisted of 7635 wether lambs, 2365 ewe lambs. 5250 twotooth ewes, and 11.200 adult sheep. Store Lambs A small gallery followed the •tore lamb sale for most of the day. and except for the most forward lambs. values were barely up to those of last week. The yarding was again a large one. and was made up principally of halfbreds and Corriedales, and a small selection of Romneys. The market opened on a very weak note, and for the rest of the day competition never became brisk, even for the best lambs. Good forward wether lambs met a sound inquiry from inland districts with values firm, but plain and backward lambs were harder selling. and these appeared to edge back a further 20c or 30c Quite a number of small lambs were sold for less than $3 and it was only the better class of lamb which fetched more than $4. Forward Romney lambs continued to have a fair sale with the better lots fetching niore than $5. There was also a good Inquiry for the better lots of shorn lambs but this week’s offering included several pens of very small shorn lambs, which sold accordingly.

Down cross lambs again met a consistent sale in spite of an absence of competition from freezing buyers.

The best of the fine-woolled wether lambs sold from 54.30 to $4.70. with odd sales to $4.90: medium sold from $3.00 to $4 and small from 2.80 to $3.40 Best Romneys sold from 54.80 to $5.30 with an odd sale to $5.50: medium sold from $4.30 to $4.70, and small down to $3.50. Two races of ewe iambs met a poor sale Buyers showed interest in only a few lots The best of the entry were barely up to last week s rates, while for the remainder, values were little better than wether lamb rates Best fine-woolled ewe lambs sold from $6 to $6 60 with one sale at $8 45: medium sold from $4.50 to $5.50. and small down to $4 Sales of store lambs included: — Wethers E. A sizable gallery followed the sale, and there were buyers for all classes of two-tooths. even though prices were al moderate levels. Romneys also met a much better demand, with the better lots of ewes being as much as $1 a head stronger than comparable ewes at Little River on Tuesday Best fine-woolled two-tooths
