Sewerage Progress

The number of premises connected to the sewer system on January 31 was 80,009 said the chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr F. R. Price) on Tuesday evening.

“As these figures do not include the separate units where flats and high-rise apartment houses have been constructed, the progress which the board has made since its area was increased in 1951 has been substantial, ’ he said. “On that date there were 37,201 connections, so that in the intervening 18 years the board has provided connections considerably exceeding in number those made in the first 75 years of its existence “This work has also meant the provision of another 313 miles of sewer and another 24 pumping stations, as well as a main pumping station, and an entirely new sewage treatment system. “Many connections are pending after the installation of more sewers in the Hornby and Sockburn district and the reticulation of Halswell and Islington," he said.
