UPSET LOSS

Water Polo Reps (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Rest beat New Zealand, 6-3, in an upset result on the last afternoon of the national water polo championships, at Naenae, yesterday. In the morning, Wellington clinched the national title with a 7-4 win over Canterbury. Wellington finished with an unbeaten record to lead Otago (one loss) and Canterbury (two losses). The defending ch mpion, Auckland, finished fourth. The New Zealand team was contained by t’ght marking. The goal-keeper, A. Trotter, had one lapse when he let through a dollied backhand shot from P. Smith, but four good saves strengthened his reputation. W. Martlew, for the Rest, scored two goals—one from a dashing individual break. The teams were:— New Zealand.—B. Spear. M. McGurr. I. Gunthorp (Canterbury). C. Gough, K. Mark, G. Martlew, P. Gotleib, A. Trotter (Wellington), L. Frost, M. Timms, I. Macintosh (Otago). Rest.—R. Freer, W. Martlew, D. Farkas. G. Schuster (Wellington). A. Koscius, D. Ellis (Auckland), 1. Brown. P. Smith. K. Stoneman. D. Kilpatrick (Otago). M. Scott (Canterbury). Canterbury entered the final quarter against Wellington with the scores, 4-4. Then K. Mark scored two goals in quick succession. For Canterbury, P. Mulligan, aged 15, appeared to slip his marker with ease, and he drove powerfully towards goal. Four of Wellington’s goals came from Mark, one from the captain, G. Martlew, and one from his brother, W. Martlew. Canterbury’s goals were scored by D. Reid, P. Mulligan, B. Mustchin and I. Gunthorp. In the under 21 contest Otago beat Wellington. 4-2. Rugby Profit.—lts match against Wales providing $9020, the Taranaki Rugby Union made a profit of $6288 last season. The union lost $2553 in the 1968 season.
