Coloured Intersection Lights Advocated
Ward 11 of the New Zealand Counties’ Association will press for more submissions to be made to the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) in support of the adoption, as a matter of national policy, of different coloured street lights to indicate street intersections.
A remit to this effect from the Paparua County. Council for consideration at the annual conferehce of the association was adopted at the annual meeting of the ward in Christchurch yesterday.
The chairman of the Paparua County Council (Mr D. H. Warren) said the system of defining street intersections by different coloured lights had been successfully adopted by a number of local authorities.
“It is. considered that for the convenience of road, users and in the interests of road safety this system could well be extended throughout New Zealand,” he said. ' ( In a letter previously sent to the association Mr Gordon said that if the policy was consistently adopted it would probably help to reduce intersections accidents at night but at the present stage he felt it was impossible to implement. “Too many roads are fully lit with sodium lights and too many intersections are not lit at all,” Mr Gordon said. “In addition, the most effec-
tive lighting is not directly over the intersection but some distance on the far side to provide a silhouette. “I consider that other means of making intersections conspicuous such as road. marking, reflecting signposts and signs should be emphasised,” Mr Gordon said.
