No Spectacular Prices For Young Ewes

Following the pattern of the early ewe fairs of the season, the Amberley southern fair yesterday did not bring the spectacular high prices it sometimes has, and some vendors of younger ewes were disappointed.

For older ewes, hdw-i ever, the sale was sound with values usefully up on last year, and even for the average to (rood and plainer younger ewes the level was bitter than it was a year ago. The sale demonstrated again that buyers had a limit on their offers and as a result the top young ewes did not have the brisk competition that they have sometimes had. The top price for the fine wool two-tooths was only $10.50. compared with $13.30 last year, and in this category the sale was not up to the fine woo! fair at Ashburton last week when sales were made at up to $12.20. However, even with a considerable drop in values for the top sheep, some vendors with sizable offerings were able to get close to their average price of last year with the average to good sheep bringing more money, and a comparison of sales of several vendors with average to good young ewes shows that they sometimes did considerably better than a year ago—by a dollar or more. The best of the two-loolhs brought from about Sfi.2o to SlO. with an odd sale to *10.30 good realised from SB to SB. average i from St to SB. and others rangedi down to about SB. Relatively Dear The older ewes looked relatively dear beside the younger eweis, with a relatively large 'number of sales In the S 6 to S 8 range. In the four-year-old section 'especially vendors showed a i useful advance over last year and on average there was 70c to 80e improvement. Five-year-old ewes appreciated similarly but It did not apply so generally there. The pick of the four-year-olds made from SB to S 9. with good at 97 to SB, average at »6 to S 7. and others at SS to SB The top flve-year-oid ewes realised from S 7 to 58.30, with good at SS to S 7. average at 9.30 to SB. and others at S 4 to S 3. The yarding at 21,910 bead was sizeable, but it was lower than last year by more than 2250. It included 0830 twotooths. 5650 four-year-olds. 5559 five-year-olds, and 451 mixed aged ewes. Considering the difficult conditions in North Canterbury in recent months, the sheep were in remarkably good order. The sale attracted its usual following of Mld-Canterbury buyers and Ashburton and Hakaia were important buying centres. Some sheep also went to South Canterbury and North Otago. ttangiora. Aylesbury, Dunsandel, Broadflelds. and the local district. The top price for two-tooths was paid" for 65 Corriedales I from D. W. .1. Gould iGlenmark! at S 10.30; Last year thei Gtenmark entry reached 89.60. Last year's top-price vendor. A.; E. Hiatt, of Limestone Hills, sold 100 Corriedales yesterday for, 910.30 and this price was also received by Dovedale Farm, Ltd. (Amberley), for 63. R. D. Gould (Marlow), whose sheep brought to 811.10 last year, had 78 yesterday at 510.20 and 144 at 810. R. G. Macdonald (Blyth-Downs) also had 240 Corriedales ' at 810.10. and C. N. Mackenzie iHappv Valley) sold 102 at 810. For 330 making from 88.70 to-810.30 A. E. Hiatt had one of the best averages of the day at almost 80.70. but it was well below his average of about 811.50 lasi year for 277. R. D. Gould, with 449 from Marlow selling at 38.50 to 810.20. averaged 39.00, compared with a pen average last year of 39.40 for 339. With 627 Corriedales ranging from 33.60 to 310. R. C. Overton of Raumati, averaged 59.30, and R. G. Macdonald had a similar average lor 1140 , making from 38.90 to 810.10. For 502 selUng from 88.70 to 39>50. 11. Fitzsimmons (Greta Vale) averaged 39.20. which was about 35c behind his average

ilaist year with a similar-sized . offering. Dovedaie Farm had an average of,almost $9 for, 169 Corriedales selling from JZ.IO to $10,30. Older Ewes R. C. Overton again topped the four an;d five-year-old ewes sections. His four-year-qld Cor-, riedales made to $9 f0r.1.50 and he had another 119 at $B/50 and ’ also 247 at $7.80. Last year Ills sheep of this brought from $7.70 to $9.40. J. J. McLean, of the Cotuwold, Omihi, realised $8.30 for 385 Corrtedales and R. D. Gould realised $B.lO for 187 Mount-Caos Corriedales—these sold to $6.50 last year. J. J. and J, F. Lochhead <Mont Serrat) also obtained $7,80 for 275 Corriedale's, whereas a year ago their price was $6/20. Mr Overton also headed the five-year-old section with a pen i of 206 making $8.30; this compared with up to $B.BO last year. Dovedaie Farm, Ltd, had 270 at 87.70, compared with $6.40 a year ago. Sulphur Springs Estate < Scargill) realised $7.65 for 304 Corriedales when last year they were paid $6.90, and A. J. Sfoss, of Glenlake, had 100 at $7.10 and 170 at $6.80. in contrast to $6.20 last year. One line of two and threeshear sheep sold for $7.40, and a single line of four and five-year-olds sold at $4.30 to $4.40.
