Low January Sunshine In South Island

The cloudy, wet weather in . the South Island last month (brought good pasture growth . and the drought in North .Otago and South Canterbury was now considered to be broken, the Meteorological . Office said today. , Rainfall for the month was: above average in the South; Island west of a line from: Karamea to Ashburton. The : Taieri River catchment received double the average ■ fall for January. , In parts of Waikato, how ever, it was the driest Janu ; I ary for many years. Rainfall was less than halt ■ the average for January west of the main North Island' ranges, north of Taupo and ■ also in central Hawke’s Bay.. I and parts of Nelson and Marl ' j borough.
