FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A slow - moving depression lies to the north-east of the North Island; an anticyclone extends from the South Tasman to southern New Zealand.

Forecast: Canterbury.—Light to moderate variable winds, mainly easterlies, in coastal places; partly cloudy; rather mild. Kaikoura Coast.—Fresh winds from the southerly quarter; partly cloudy, cool weather predominating; possibly a few isolated light showers.

Inland Marlborough, Nelson.—Winds mostly moderate and variable with easterlies predominating; some cloudy areas but generally fine and mild in the afternoon. Buller.
