Food Index Rises

WELLINGTON, Feb. 11
The average level of food prices was 1.4 per cent higher last month than in December, 1969, according to the food group index of the Consumers’ Priee Index releaseij today. The Government Statistician (Mr J. P. Lewin) said that the feed group index rose from JlBl to H 97.
Higher-priced seasonal fruits and vegetables eentri, butefi 18 peints to the rite. Beef, biscuit*, and coco* each contributed a quarter of a point. Other foods also cost mere.
Eggs, mutton, lamb and bacon cost less.
In 1965, the base period for the index, food accounted for 30.09 per cent of expenditure covered by the index.
