EIGHT DAYS LEFT TO PAY RATES
Heathcote county ratepayers are proving to be the promptest payers in the Christchurch area. By yesterday 59 per cent in Heathcote had paid their rates, compared with 41 per cent in the city. Only six days are left open by local body offices to receive rates before the late payment penalty is imposed.
In the Riccarton borough,; 53.68 per cent of ratepayers: had paid, well up on the figure for the comparative day last year. About 42 per cent of the ratepayers in Lyttelton borough had paid, but the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson), said that Lyttelton people “always leave it to the last three days. So will the staff in other local body offices, if ratepayers want to avoid the 10 per cent penalty for late payment. Next Wednesday, February 18, is the last date for payment without penalty for all the Christchurch local bodies. The situation yesterday was: City.—Total levy, $6,402.165; amount paid $2,654,678. or 41.47 per cent, compared with 48.63 per cent at the comparable time last year. Paparua. Total levy, 8713,155; amount paid $312,376, or 43.8 per cent, slightly ahead of the position last year. Lyttelton. Total levy, $111,813, amount paid $46,196, or 42 per cent, about the same as last year. Waimairi. Total levy, 1 $1,613,790; amount paid 5655.480, or 40.6 per cent, about the same as last year Riccarton. Total levy,
