Waterloo Too Good In Trotters’ Final

Just as Manaroa proved a class above his rivals in the Dunedin Festival Final Cup so did Waterloo In the final of the Caltex Intermediate Trotters’ Championship. He won by an even wider margin of 11 lengths from Fair Piay. Waterloo had broken in his two other starts at the meeting, but he revelled in the changed conditions and was always trotting well, although M. Holmes ran no risk of running into trouble with him. Waterloo gradually improved fairly wide and he took the lead from Anne Peterson with more than five furlongs left. From then on he was completely master of the race and he won with a lot in hand from Fair Play, which trotted another splendid race. Lucky Wood recorded her best effort for some time when she finished third, ahead of Aronmot, with the others, headed by Final Donn. down the track. Inky Boy, a rather unlucky runner on the second night of the meeting, gained a long overdue win for his Templeton trainer, C. C. Devine, when he

won the Lady Belmer Pace. The close relation of Cardigan Bay was first out. but later he received a good trail behind Upper Class. He gathered in the pacemaker early in the run home and won handily by two lengths and a half. Upper Class held on for second, half a length in front of Rhinegolde, with Pun going an improved race for a distant fourth, clear of Johnny Kawa. The hot favourite. Ghandi. could not handle the conditions and after being handy for a mile dropped right out. finishing eleventh. TWO WINS EACH The South Canterbury trainers, C. C. Scott and S. I. Henderson. produced the winners of two races each during the night. Waiata was much too good for his rivals in the Starbeam Pace and, although he won by only a length from Monarrg, he was driven with great confidence by D. J. Townley and had plenty in reserve. Monarrg went a sound race to shade Wakanui and Swift Action for second.

Old Timer gained his second win at the meeting when, after being restrained in fourth place until the final furlong, he drew out to win by two lengths and a half from Young Rodney, with Local Rose and Fortunate following at intervals. Seafield Queen and Direct Jan both completed doubles at the meeting in a manner which suggested that they should not be too long extending their records. Seafield Queen, after being tailed off early, won the Trueco Pace by five lengths from Aero Circle and Good Lord, another to lose ground early. Water Skier was close up fourth after having his chance. Direct Jan did not look a danger in the Vodka Handicap until inside the final half-mile. She then gathered in the leaders with ease and in the straight she was not asked for a serious effort to beat Black Frost. Dan Mack and Fri. Morano Lad, after being last early, moved up to second with five furlongs left in the Acropolis Pace and he was pacing easily from then on to beat Bobby Blue by a length. Five lengths away Morris Pal beat Raphael and Bravine for third.
