14 TEAMS LEFT IN OPEN PAIRS

Fourteen teams, two of which are two-lifers, survived the second day's play in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s 1970 open pairs championship on Saturday. The final rounds were to have been played yesterday, but because of the weather they had to be postponed. A new date will be set at tonight’s monthly meeting of the centre. The two teams which have come through eight rounds without a loss are the Burwood pair of C. B. Hill and M. J. Sealby (s) and the Fendalton combination of G. A. Coronal and G. W. Thomson (s). The skips still with one life are: N. D. Wales (Woolston), E. M. McCahon (Elmwood), D. P. White (Christchurch W.M.C.), C. T. Bateman (Opawa), R. L. Lindsay (Ashburto-n), I. Anticich (New Brighton). A. A. Glendinning (St Martins), D. H. Stuart (Dalllngton), E. C. Colville (St Albans), J. C. McDonald (Elmwood), R. A. Croft (Fendalton), and G. J. Hayward (Elmwood). Seven greens were in use for the first two rounds on Saturday, but in the afternoon the number was reduced to four. The greens were fast, although sudden gusts of wind in the morning gave competitors additional drawing problems. The 23 two-lifers remaining after the first four rounds the previous Saturday were matched at the Christchurch W.M.C.’s green and It was here that some of the day’s most interesting games were played. Thomson was in fine form from the opening round, in which he had a comfortable win over A. Memory (Christchurch W.M.C.), who took third place in the open singles last week. Memory was eliminated from the contest when he went down 16-18 to J. Turpin (Canterbury), in the second round, and Turpin, too, was put out of contention by Wales in the next round. Sealby did well to beat H. C. Bradley (Elmwood), 20-10 In the first round of the day, but then he was a little fortunate to retain his two lives against White in the next round. The score in Sealby’s favour was 21-18. White, who won his club’s championship pairs last week, held on grimly to his retaining life, through the two afternoon rounds.

McCahon. who like White was In the last six in the singles championship, had a hard struggle to stay in the pairs race. He was narrowly beaten by R. C. Lamb (Beckenham) in the first round of the day, but had better fortune in the afternoon when his two wins were by one point and three points respectively. __

At the start of the eighth round the two-lifers besides Sealby and Thomson were Croft and Hayward. Croft, who had some anxious moments before beating J. B. Rennie (Rangiora) in the morning, was reduced to the ranks of the one-lifers by his club-mate Thomson, and Hay ward had his fjrst loss at the hands of a one-lifer, Wales. The 1968 champion pair, Cogswell and F. A. Hughes, who started the day as two-lifers, were eliminated in the final round by Bateman’s Opawa team. Earlier A. Gray (Elmwood) had relieved Cogswell of his first life. Results of the eighth round were:— G. W. Thomson (Fendalton) 18, R. A. Croft (Fendalton) 12; N. D. Wales (Woolston) 19, G. J. Hayward (Elmwood) 14; E. M. McCahon (Elmwood) 22, D. McNeil (Rangiora) 19; D. P. White (Christchurch W.M.C.) 14 R. C. Lamb (Beckenham) 11; 'C. T. Bateman (Opawa) 21. W. J. Cogswell (St Albans) 16; R L. Lindsay (Ashburton) 25, H. B. Moore (Burwood) 16. I. Anticich (New Brighton) 24. W. J. Cole (Christchurch) 15; A. A. G lend inning (St Martins) 18, P. H. Rose (Burnside) 15; D. H. Stuart (Dalllngton) 18, A. H. Caldwell (Riccarton W.M.C.) 13; E. C. Colville (St Albans) 18, H. A. Barltrop (Papanui) 16; J. C. McDonald (Elmwood) 18, T. F. Coup (Kaiapoi) 10; M. J. Sealby (Burwood) a bye.
