Excellent Time In Medley Event At Swimming

Susan Hunter, who was forced to withdraw from the first session of finals in the Canterbury swimming championships, returned in the second session to record a remarkable time in the women’s 400 metres medley at the Centennial Pool on Saturday evening.

Miss Hunter had been forced to stop swimming earlier in the week because of facial neuralgia which caused extreme pain. But she decided to swim in the finals on Saturday evening and was rewarded with an excellent time of smin 32.8 sec in the medley, which came within four seconds of the record set by Miss T. K. Shipston, New Zealand’s finest swimmer in the event until she retired last year.

Miss Hunter swam alone, but maintained an even pace in each lap. She has recorded a faster time, smin 28.1 sec, in the New South Wales championships which placed her fifth in the Commonwealth, and her swim on Saturday evening marked her resilience i difficult conditions. She swam in four other events and won each. Another performance in the 200 metres breaststroke, which she won in 3min B.ssec, was her best time in New Zealand for the event. The expected clashes be-1 tween M. F. Treffers, A. B. Kindred and G. S. Walker in the men’s freestyle events did not occur. Treffers, a pupil at Christchurch Boys’ High School had taken part in a sixth-form march from Governor’s Bay to Christchurch the day before as part of the barracks week and had 11 blisters on his feet and muscle soreness. He swam in only one event, the 200 metres freestyle and looked so tired that he did not swim again in the programme. The race was won by Walker in 2min 7.3 sec, a rather slow time. Kindred looked sluggish finishing second in 2min 11.2 sec, but Treffers had to struggle over the last 50 metres to hold third place in 2min 18.5 sec, 12sec below his best time. He said he did not know ' that the walk was anything : more than a compass' exer- i cise, but once on it he kept ' walking. Kindred redeemed himself j with a good time in the 400 1 metres freestyle which he ■ won by 40 metres in 4min , 28.2 sec. It was four seconds ■ off his record, but he swam 1 unpaced. Walker had an excellent < championship meeting, after j a month of difficulties in training and sickness. He f won three titles, setting rec- ■ ords in both the 200 metres : and 400 metres medley, was : second in the 200 metres but- ! terfly and third in the breast- ! stroke. •

In the three sessions of the finals, 29 Canterbury records were broken, and two more swimmers, J. Johnston (Elmwood) and Miss Sharon Anderson (Woolston Park) joined the other 10 swimmers who have qualified for the national championships. Miss J. A. Wright started the Saturday swimming off well by breaking Miss Shipston’s 200 metres backstroke record. Her time of 2min 35.45ec was only 2.ssec outside the qualfiying time set by the national selectors for the Commonwealth Games team for Edinburgh. The most exciting race of the programme was again in the boys’ under-14 freestyle section. On Thursday, a Greymouth swimmer, David Jones, won from an outside lane in the 400 metres event, but swimming in one of the faster inside lanes in the 200 metres, and the others kept a much more wary eye on him and he was beaten for the title by Roy Gray, whose time of 2min IS.Ssec broke Jones’s record bv 4.2 sec. Jones was second after valiantly attempting to catch Gray in the last length. His time. 2min 19.4 sec. with Gray’s, would rank among the top four in thfe age group in New Zealand.

Wendy Wakefield (Westport), who surprisingly broke the record of Susan Hunter in the 50 metres breaststroke on Thursday, broke another record in the final session in the 100 metres breaststroke with a time of Imin 38.1 sec, which was o.ssec better than the record. Nicki Hudson in the girls’ under-10 50 metres butterfly gave the Ellesmere association its first title win in more than 20 years and she also set a new record with her time of 46.95ec.
