Long-Distance Swimming Title Retained

A. Christie (Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay) retained his New Zealand long-distance swimming title with an excellent time in squally conditions over a one-mile course near Diamond Harbour yesterday. Christie led from start to finish and began to draw away from the second place swimmer, J. Symon (Canterbury), after the first lap. His time for the three miles was Ihr Imin 47sec. Symon was second in Ihr 2min 49sec, and the junior from Otago, D. Allen, was third in Ihr 3min 45sec.

Miss G. Donaldson (Otago) won the women’s three-mile event in Ihr 3min 38sec which would have given her third place in the senior men’s event. Another Otago swimmer. Miss B. Boberg, was second in Ihr 6min Isec and Miss A. Taiapa (Hawke’s Bay) was third in ihr 9min 48sec. The former New Zealand representative swimMiss M. Mcßae, who recently returned to amateur status was fifth in the women’s race in Ihr llmin 3sec. In the Canterbury long distance championships, held at the same time, Symon won tlie junior two-mile race in 41min 23.8 sec.
