LONDON MURDER

Four Youths Sentenced I (N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) , I . LONDON, Feb. 8. i Four youths aged 15 to 18 ■ who beat a man to death on a lonely London common because they thought he was a homosexual stood unmoved in Court on Friday as they received heavy sentences. The youths, found guilty of murder, did not flinch as a judge sentenced the eldest to life imprisonment and the others to indefinite detention. The Court heard that the youths, armed with sticks and accompanied by two 15-year-old girls, set out on a "queerbashing expedition” to London’s Wimbledon Common, a haunt of homosexuals. They hid waiting for pass-ers-by, then pounced on a 28-year-old solicitor’s clerk, Michael de Grunchy, beating and kicking him savagely. He died in hospital from head wounds.

Mr De Grunchy's only crime, the prosecution said, was that they thought he was a homosexual. The youths had pleaded not guilty to murder.
