Merino Ram Export Ban
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, Feb. 6. The New South Wales Labour Council last night unanimously endorsed a ban on the handling of Merino rams for export. The decision is binding on all unions affiliated with the council. The president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (Mr Robert Hawke), will discuss in Sydney today the possibility of extending the ban on a national basis. Several New South Wales unions have already agreed to a request from the Australian Labour Party state executive not to handle the rams when a 40-year-old ban on their export is lifted on February 14 for a trial period. Opponents of the plan claim that the lifting of the ban will end Australia’s world domintaion in the growing of fine quality Merino fleece.
Foreign sheep-breeders yesterday paid a total of nearly $120,000 for 48 Merino stud rams at the Sydney sheep show, the first sold for export for 41 years. Buyers came from China, Rumania, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, India and New Zealand..
