Scottish Conservationist To Study Water Areas

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. Land-locked water areas in New Zealand will be studied by a noted Scottish conservationist who is expected to arrive on February 26. The Minister of Lands -(Mr Maclntyre) said today that Dr J. Berry, former Director of Nature Conservation in Scotland, would follow a comprehensive itinerary covering all water areas in New Zealand. Dr Berry will hold discussions with officers of the Ministry of Works and the Departments of Electricity, Marine. Internal Affairs and Lands and Survey. Representatives of these departments and officers of the Nature Conservation Council would accompany him on his visits to important areas. Dr Berry is now retained as fishery adviser and biological consultant to the North of Scotland HvdroElectric Board. He will remain in New Zealand until the end of March.

The Director-General of the Lands and Survey Department (Mr R. J. McLachlan) said today that although Dr Berry would report to various bodies, such as the Nature Conservation Council, on problems in New Zealand related to his field, no move had been made to ask his opinion on the proposed raising of the level of Lake Manapouri. Dr Berry’s visit will be partly financed by the Lands and Survey Department, which will bear the cost of his travel within New Zealand.
