MANAPOURI ESTIMATE

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 5. A former Ministry of Works engineer-in-chief said tonight that if the level of Lake Manapouri was not raised the potential loss of energy would total between sl.6m and s2m a year. Mr C. W. 0. Turner told the Southland Progress League: “Only experience of operation will give a clear picture of the specific amounts of these, but there can be no doubt that they will be substantial, and it would be reasonable to say that the total los of energy from the company’s entitlement would be between 400 million and 500 million kilowatt hours per annum (or units). “To give some comprehensible ‘scale’ to these figures, at say 0.4 cents per unit, the loss would be between $L6m and $2 per annum year after year.
