INJURED ANKLE

Holder Not Competing Miss B. Poulsen (Technical) has given up hopes of defending her New Zealand pentathlon championship at Napier next month because of a recurring ankle injury. This will jeopardise her chances of selection for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, although another win in the national shot championship with a distance exceeding 48ft might be enough to gain the favour of the selectors. She will not defend her 200 metres title in the Canterbury championships today and will withdraw from the long jump as well. She will, however, compete in the shot event. Another Technical athlete, T. McGillivray, who has had his activities restricted by a leg injury, has decided to contest the 800 metres today. If his injury is giving trouble after the heats, he will withdraw. McGillivray is the present half-mile champion.
