CANTERBURY MUDFISH
Extinction Feared The rarity of the Canterbury Mudfish could urge collectors to hunt it to extinction as in the case of the Huia, says Mr G. Stokell in a letter to the editor of “The Press.” Mr Stokell says that an article on the mudfish which appeared in “The Press” on January 28, indicates the principal cause of the gradual disappearance of this fish. “For a considerable time university students and fisheries biologists have raided I the Waters in which it was known to exist and are now endeavouring to ascertain other localities of its occurrence,” he says. . “Some time ago an application for its absolute protection under the Animals Protection Act was made to the Department of Internal Affairs by Mr W. M. Burrows, -Mr W. J. Phillippe and myI self, but the only results were (requests from the Marine De- . partment for information on I ; where the fish could be found. I
“This application for protection followed the capture
by a fisheries official of about a dozen specimens, most of ! which were taken to America,” he says.
