Safety With Firearms
Sir,—Having for so many years “blown my top” in these columns about the appalling number of quite unnecessary and inexcusable "shooting ac-
cidents,” I would be grateful if you would allow me to pay this tribute to the police for the introduction of an Amendment (No. 6) to the Arms Regulations, that came into effect on September 1, 1969. This provides for an exhaustive examination of applicants for firearms licences, comprising 25 questions based on the Arms Code, a new pamphlet issued over the signature of the Commissioner, G. C. Urquhart, a copy of which, thanks to the courtesy of the Minister of Police, I have recently received. In the light of my own not inconsiderable experience in the handling of firearms, I give the police absolutely top marks for this lucid, comprehensive and admirably illustrated book, which, given the widest possible circulation, could well prove the saving of many a life.—Yours, etc., ILAM.
