1863 Newspapers In Old House
A shingled roof and pages of newspapers dated 1863, pasted to the interior lining, indicate that a house being demolished at 10 Gatherer Street is well over a century old. Pages from the “Canterbury; Standard” dated January 27, 1863, and March 3. 1863, are still legible after 106 years, and make interest-! ing reading. A report by electric telegraph from the paper’s correspondent at Lyttelton recounts: “Early on Tuesday the funeral of those who perished in the late catastrophe of the Orpheus has taken place and was, of a very imposing character.” (In one of the worst shipwrecks off the New Zealand coast, 150 out of the complement of 259 were lost in the disaster.) A report from the Town Clerk mentions that the whole or greater portion of Armagh, Cashel, Colombo. Hereford Lichfield, Manchester, Salisbury, Durham, Gloucester, Worcester, St Asaph. Kilmore and Barbadoes Streets—a total length of six and a half miles—had been formed and : metalled at a very reasonable j cost. A cottage two miles ifrom town is advertised as .being let for five shillings a
week, and in another advertisement a £5 reward is; offered for information lead-; ing to the recovery of two horses lost, stolen or-strayed; from Sandwich Station. In! the March 3 newspaper, rac-! ing fans could pick up the re-, suits of the Timaru races,; run on February 24. ' One of the earliest newspapers in Canterbury, the .“Standard” was established in 1854, with premises at the corner of Hereford Street and Oxford Terrace. The newspaper was 1 taken over by the “Lyttelton Times” in 1866 after “The Press,” which was established in 1861, began to make iriroads into its circulation. The last known issue of the “Standard” was in May, 1866. Copies of all the issues of the “Standard” are on file at the Canterbury Museum. .
