FLOCK RAM FAIR Brisk Sale For Some Breeds

The sale for Southdown rams was not as good on the opening day of the Canterbury flock ram fair at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday as it was last year, but there was a very strong inquiry for all other mutton breeds, and practically a complete clearance was achieved at auction in some cases.

Although the average price for Southdowns slipped only about 4f per cent, or about $2 a head, the inquiry was not nearly as strong as at the last fair, when practically the whole entry was taken at auction. Yesterday sales at auction disposed of a little more than 60 per cent of the offering, which was, however, on this occasion a very much bigger one.

The average price for Dorset Downs was nearly a third lower than at last year’s sale, but with a much bigger number of rams penned this year there was still an excellent market and sales were frequently made at more than SBO. Only one ram of a sizeable offering of South Dorset Downs failed to find a ouyer at auction and here the general level of values was higher than last year by almost 16 yer cent There was a complete I clearance of South Suffolks at values very similar to last year, and for part of a small entry of Poll Dorsets values showed an improvement of almost 70 per cent on last year.

On the basis of the strength of the inquiry and the speed of selling, there was every indication that the market could have done with more of the heavier breed rams.

Southdowns Although about 43 per cent more Southdown rams were penned, fewer rams changed hand at auction than last year. Of a catalogued entry of 888 a little more than 800 were put

up for sale, and of these 512■ were sold at auction compared, with 554 out of the 562 actually: offered Last year. In both runs of the sale, sales! made at auction were just a little in excess of 60 per cent; of the selection, and in both' runs the level of values was very similar with 290 bringing an average of almost 141 in the first run. and 222 slightly in excess of >40.50 m the second run. over the whole Southdown sale the average for 512 rams sold was just short of $4l, and this was $2 or more than 4i per cent back on last year’s result. The pick of the rams in the selection brought from about >6O to $lOO. with average to good rams making from about $4O to $6O. and others from about >3O. In contrast to the sale last year, when everything was in demand, inferior and plain condition rams were not; wanted The top price of the day was, $lOO for an entry from D. H. Robertson, of Gore, which was bought by Dalgety and New I Zealand Loan. Heriot, for K. G. Stiven. D. C. McMillan, off Irwell, whose sheep met al strong sale again, also had: a pen of five which brought . $B2 each. These were pur-1 chased by E. D. and E. T. Stew-1 art. of Rakaia. Mr McMillan had the top average of the sale with 37 ramsbringing from $4O to $B2, and; averaging almost $5B. This was better than his result last year, when his average for 32 sales was $53. . For nine Robertson rams: making from $4O to $lOO the: average was $5O. T. E. M. Brooks, of Brook-■ side, was again to the fore with 19 rams selling from $4O to $65: averaging $47.50. but in this: case this was not as good as I a year ago, when the average, for 24 rams was $53.50. For 21 rams realising from, $45 to $54, R. M. and G. A.| Petrie, of Swannanoa, aver-i aged better than $47, ahd with a small selection of seven? bringing from $39 to $56, A. M. Saunders (Ashburton) also bad a $47 average. T. M. Fleming, Ltd <Balcairn), averaged almost $46 for 16 selling at $42 to $5O. With 31 making from $39 to $52. J. S. Brooks, of Irwell. averaged $43. Last year for 24 his average was $49.50. J. G. and D. A. Crawford, of Oxford, were a little below a $43 average with 24 selling from $3l to $5O. C. J. McCaskey and Son (Waipara), had an average of almost $42 with 15 rams making from $35 to ss3—last year their average was $4B for 12—and R. J. Low and Son, of Highbank, were also about the $42 mark with five sellings from $4O to $5O.

A. Zuppicich, of Prebbleton, with 25 selling from $37 to $5O averaged $4l compared with $47 for 17 last year, and D. W. Sheat, of Dunsandel, with 20 bringing from $37.50 to $44, averaged $4l when last year his average was nearly $52 for 15. Forty-two of the Southdowns were bought for the W air ar a pa. Dorset Downs

The Dorset Down entry showed a rise from 27 last year to 100, and although the over-all average was down, it was nevertheless an excellent sale, with a strong demand prevailing from start to finish.

For 90 rams sold at auction the average was $72.40 compared with $lO7 for the small offering last year. Darenal Estate, of Amberley, again took the top price with a single entry at $350, compared with $320 last year. The same vendor had two other sales of singles at $lOO and $9O, with two rams being passed in.

S. R. Inwood (Coutts Island), sold eight rams at $6O to $l5O, for an average of $92.60; Bayldon Farm (Amberley), fivp from >7O to $95 for an average of >77.40: R. T. Masefield (Akaroa), averaged >71.20 for eight, his sales ranging from $7O to $80; and D. C. Kelman (Geraldine), averaged $78.30 for three, with sales from $75 to >BO. South Dorset Downs South Dorset Down rams met a brisk inquiry, and from the offering of 123, 122 were sold under the hammer for an average of more than $55. This was $7.50 a head better than last year when 127 out of 140 were sold at auction. I Very few rams were sold for 'less than $5O, and sales at $6O or more were common. A. A. and L. W. Ellis, of Amberley, topped the section with a single ram at $125, and the same vendors had other sales of singles at $112.50 and $62.50. Their average for the small consignment was a round $lOO.

The Darenal Estate, of Amberley which topped last year's fair at $l7O, had sales at $ll5 and $75. J. P. Marshall, of Darfield. obtained a good average of $7O for a consignment of nine, his sales ranging from $56 to $75. D. and M. Stowell, of Ashburton. sold nine from $5O to $65 for an average of $59, and with sales of three singles at $55 to $67.50. Mrs F. K. Beere (Dunsandel) obtained an average of 963.30. South Suffolks

The entry of 52 South Suffolk I rams had a complete clearance ; at auction. The over-all average was $50.40, compared with $51.60 for 40 sold last year. C. E. and L. F. Leighton, of Waimate, topped the sale with a pen of three at $6O, and for a consignment of eight their average was $57. W. M. Early, of Montalto, was again the principal vendor, his 19 rams selling from $47 to $55 for an average of about $50.50. A similar average was obtained by D. J. and J. Stewart (Rakaia) for 12, their sales ranging from $47.50 to $55. Poll Dorsets Newton Brothers, of Little River, were again the sole vendors in the Poll Dorset section. From an offering of 13. they sold nine at auction for an average of $57.50. compared with a $34 average for 14 last year. The top price was $65 for two rams, and another pair of rams fetched $6O each. Last year’s top price was $4O. Hampshires D. S. Crosson (Rakaia) was I the sole vendor in the HampI shire section. He sold two rams •at $BO, with six others, offered jin pairs, realising $75 each. The fair will continue today i with the sale of Border Leicester. Lincoln, halfbred. Merino, ‘Corriedale. English Leicester, land Romney rams. DORSET DOWNS Wright, Stephenson and Company, sold on account off: — J. and R. Andrew, Motunau: 1 at >65 D. C. Kelman, Geraldine: 1 at $BO W.
