NATIVE ALPINE ORCHID
From November to March is a good time to go looking for native plants in flower. The Port Hills provide much of interest and are close at hand, but a trip to Porters Pass (Fog Peak) or Arthur's Pass National Park offers very much more. In such areas, particularly Arthur’s Pass, the trained observer will And a wealth of varied native plants. The photograph shows the horizontal orchid (Lyperanthus antarcticus) which is found near the summit of Arthur's Pass, only a few hundred feet from the highway. This orchid is often found in boggy areas of subalpine regions of the South Island. It has greenish yellow flowers which are blooming now.
