Silver Shears Contest

T7NTRIES from Kaikoura Central Otago have been received for the Lions’ Silver Shears championship to be held at Canterbury Court, Addington, on Saturday, February 28. The organisers of the contest will run contests for individual blade and machine shearers and also a teams’ event for machine shearers and wool handlers. As an added attraction, three exhibitions two in the afternoon and one in the evening—will be given by the 11-year-old Gisborne lad, Nuku Smiler, who some weeks ago sheared 100 sheep in 6hr 45min. The Silver, Shears championship will be quite a lot; larger than last year’s inaugural contest. Five hundred sheep will be required for the three events. Six heats will be run off in the blade and machine contests, with the semifinals and finals being decided In the evening. In the teams’ event, four, finalists Will be Selected on points after the heats have .been run off. Excellent prizes have been provided for. the contest. A silver trophy, and an air trip to Australia for

two persons, will go to the winner of the blade shearing section. The trip to Australia is being provided by Trans Tours. A tour of the South Island for two persons for seven days, and a “Sunbeam” shearing handpiece, will go to the winner of the individual machine contest. This tour, also is being provided by Trans Tours. Cash prizes of $BO, $4O and $2O respectively will go to the second, third, and fourth place-getters in both sections. Members of the winning team in the teams’ event will each receive a wrist watch, while electric shavers will be awarded to the other place-getters. The shearing championships will run from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 10.20 p.m. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey), will present the prizes. The organisers of the championship, officials of the Christchurch Lions’ Club, are also planning a mannequin parade during the evening events. Proceeds from the championships will again go to the St John Ambulance Association.
