DELAY IN SEARCH

Plane Turns Back The air search begun yesterday for the SB5OO Cessna taken’ from Taieri airport on Tuesday was abandoned because of bad weather. The 19-year-old youth who is believed to have taken the Cessna had told a friend he intended to fly it to a lake in the Manapouri-Te Anau area, put it down in deep water, swim ashore and live in the bush for several years. On Wednesday the rescue! co-ordination centre at. Christchurch airport ar- ■ ranged for a Royal New Zealand Air Force Devon from Wigram to be used on the search.

The Devon left Christchurch at 7 a.m. to fly down the West Coast to search the Milford-Manapouri-Te Anau area. About 9.30 a.m., when the aircraft was near Big Bay, between Milford and Haast, it ran into bad weather and searching became impossible. The aircraft returned to Christchurch. The search co-ordinator in Christchurch (Mr F. A. Cox) said it seemed there would be no major improvement in the weather today. "We will resume the air search as soon as the weather in the area becomes good enough, but of course we may get a lead on where the Cessna is in the meantime,” be said.
