Russia Buys 1000 Tons Of N.Z. Beef
LVeir Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 5. A Wellington firm, Evans Export, Ltd, has concluded a deal for the sale of 1000 tons of beef to Russia. The order is worth 8650,000.
The managing director of ■ the company (Mr N. P. Evans) I said tonight that his company was hopeful of doing more 1 business with Russia. Negotiations had been going on for about six weeks, and the deal was the completion of an order the Russians had made. Evans Export has already sold about 2500 tons of ewe mutton to Russia. Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd, of Auckland, has sold about 10,000 tons of beef and mutton. The latest sale brings the ! total value of New Zealand ; meat sales to Russia this year to about S6.lm. Mr Evans said the deal j would have a substantial
effect on the Japanese market. Increased demand from Eastern Europe for meat generally had increased the price the Japanese were prepared to pay for mutton. “We hope it is going to affect things in Britain too.” he said. “The increased demand could generate higher prices in London.” All the beef in the order will be shipped in April, May and June, and will go to Baltic ports. Mr Evans said shipping arrangements were in the hands of the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee and the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, which had promised to make the necessary space available.
