Judge Objects To Notes

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, February 5. British detectives no longer carry notebooks because they spoil the fit of their jackets, a judge at the Sheffield Assizes was told yesterday. Mr Justice Howard, who said that the policy should be changed, refused tc allow Detective Constable Graham Storr to refer to notes he had made on scrap paper before writing them into his official notebook. A Police Federation spokesman said later: “Of course detectives don’t always take books with them. Our attitude is that this is none of the judge's business. He has only to satisfy himself that it was a note made at the time —no matter what it was written on. It doesn't matter w nether it was an old envelope or a piece of toilet Paper.” Detective Constable Storr was giving evidence in a case of blackmail which was stopped by the judge, the two defendants being found not guilty.
