Hertzog Makes Fresh Attack On Govt

(.V.Z.P.A.-Reuter — Copyright) CAPE TOWN, February 4. Dr Albert Hertzog, a champion of hardline Afrikaners, has said that South Africa’s English-speaking inhabitants are inclined towards liberalism, and that in this is their weakness.

“It is an attitude which can only lead to more concessions and greater permissiveness, and in this country can have only one ultimate result, namely the disappearance of the whites,” he told Parliament yesterday. Dr Hertzog, a former Cabinet Minister who was expelled from the National Party last year because of his extreme Right-wing views, said that the strength of the Afrikaners lay in their belief in the calvinistic code and way of life. While the task of the English-speakers probably lay in the economic and financial field, the Afrikaners’ function was to maintain and protect white civilisation in South Africa, Dr Hertzog said. Now leader of the Herstigte Nasionale (Reconstituted National Party), he attacked Government concessions to non-white visitors, naming Negroes, Arabs and Maoris in the context of what he described as a systematic breaking down of National Party principles.

“The once-great party has become mortally sick and stricken with lameness under the leadership of Mr John Vorster,” he declared. “In April of last year,” he said, “the Government ordered that non-white visitors to South Africa were to be allowed to stay in white hotels. “At the end of May, the chief commissioner of South Africa’s girl guides received permission from the Minister of Community Development for a multi-racial rally in a white area of Pretoria.

"And more recently, the Minister of Transport announced that Maoris would be allowed to come to South Africa, and that even nonwhites in a French Rugby team, presumably Arabs and Negroes, would be welcome.”
