Tonnage Down

A decrease of almost 13.000 tons in the tonnage handled at Lyttelton from October 1, 1969 to January 23, 1970, compared with the same period in 1968-69 was reported at the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s meeting yester- : day. The over-all decrease was 12,747 tons, imports being 349,144 tons compared with 357,604 tons in the 1968-69 period. Total tonnage handled was 494,281 tons between last October and January 23. The general manager (Mr A. J. Sowden) said that if the shipping position continued as it had done in the last few weeks he anticipated that the deficiency would be made up.
