Schumacher For Stakes
“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. The Australian rider, M Schqmacher, has joined the Australian riders who have accepted invitations to ride in the International Stakes at Te Rapa on February 17. Schumacher, aged 32, rides at 8-2. He now rides in Queensland. In 1961 Schumacher was disqualified for life after an incident in the A.J.C. Derby. Schumacher, riding Blue Era, was found to have held the second horse, Summer Fair, in a tight finish. The disqualification was subsequently shortened, and Schumacher had it lifted more recently to allow him to ride again. His big wins include the Melbourne Cup, A.J.C. Derby, Epsom Handicap, Doomben Ten Thousand Golden 'Slipper Stakes, and Australian Cup. No Jackpots At Trentham (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Wellington Racing Club has dropped the jackpot scheme. In a statement yesterday the club said a recent committee meeting had resolved, in view of the recent declining support and the heavy expense involved, to discontinue jackpots. The committee felt that the original aspects of the scheme, to give betters an alternative method of wagering and to attract more people to the course, had been defeated bv the advent of syndicate betting. It was felt that the expense involved could be better devoted to improving amenities at Trentham.
