Colour Camera In Christchurch
“The beginning of a new era” someone said at CHTV3 on Tuesday afternoon, when the N.Z.B.C.’s colour camera was demonstrated to technical and production staff and the press. And a new era it will certainly be if colour Icomes to New Zealand as successfully as in the demonstration.
The camera was brought to New Zealand for an inter-] national fair at Auckland,: and last year was displayed in Auckland and Wellington, and bought by the N.Z.B.C. Recently it has been in Dunedin for demonstrations. The camera was used in Christchurch for two days to display its merits and its working to staff members. In England last year Pandora watched colour television on several occasions. Outdoor telecasts were magnificent, and the 8.8. C. colour coverage of Wimbledon quite outstanding. But the evening studio programmes were not always so successful. Sometimes actors had blue or green hair and there was a lack of sharp definition between the colours sometimes. That might possibly have been the fault of the receiving set, but it is unlikely that any other receiver would have given as good a picture as the demonstration camera; at Christchurch where, it was explained, conditions on the closed circuit were about perfect. The vivid and accurate colours on the screen, the sharpness of definition, hinted that with the best of equipment available for the day New Zealand introduces a
colour channel, it will provide very great enjoyment for viewers.
