RECORD TUNA

(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, February 4. The largest tuna caught in New Zealand waters was brought to Tauranga this afternoon to have plaster casts made from it. The tuna, weighing 6581 b, was boated at Mayor Island yesterday by Mr E. Andrews, of Piopio, fishing from the launch, Luana, skippered by Mr G. Hitchings. It broke the New Zealand record set by Mr J. D. Jackson at Whitianga in 1968 by nearly 1401 b. The tuna boated yesterday is thought to have established a record for Australia and New Zealand. When the fish struck shortly before noon, it ran off 400 yards in one burst, and was boated after a 55-minute battle. Neither the angler nor the skipper realised at first that he had caught a record fish. A plaster cast of the tuna will be presented to Mr G. A. Walsh, M.P. for Tauranga, to be displayed in Parliament buildings. Others will be made for the Tauranga Big Game Fishing Club and for Mr Hitchings.
