FREIGHT RISE

Cargoes From Malaysia (N.Z.P .4. Staff Correspondent) SINGAPORE, Feb. 4. Freight rates on goods shipped from Malaysia and Singapore to New Zealand will rise 7| per cent from April 1. This was announced in Singapore today by the Straits-New Zealand direct conference—the Union Steam Ship Company, Royal Interocean Lines, and the British Indian Steam Navigation Company, Ltd. A spokesman for the lines said freight rates on New Zealand exports to Singapore and Malaysia were not subject to the increase. The main cargoes from Malaysia and Singapore are rubber, petroleum products, tin and alloys, and fruit (mostly canned pineapple). Rubber is exempt from the new freight rise.
