81 Soldiers On Way Home

All but two of the 83 soldiers who have been searching roadsides in South Westland for clues to assist the police in their investigation of the death of Miss Jennifer Beard left Lake Moeraki at midday yesterday to return to Christchurch.

Detective Inspector E. T. Mitten, who is in charge of the investigation, said at Lake Moeraki last evening that detectives searching the area in which Miss Beard’s body was found had discovered 25 articles but their value to the investigation was still not known.

The detectives’ search of the area in which the body was found was completed on Saturday. Policemen and soldiers

searching the highway and all side roads and tracks between the West Coast entrance to the Haast Pass and Fox Glacier had found nothing which at present could be described as significant. Inspector Mitten said that police teams would carry on the search. Some ground would be covered again. If necessary the search would be extended, though the cut in manpower would mean it would be slower. The two soldiers left are drivers and they and their utility vehicles have been placed at the disposal of the police.
