Decathlon man is athlete of year
The American allrounder, W. Toomey, has been chosen by the American publication, "Track and Field News,** as its athlete of 1969. Toomey competed in 10 decathlons last year and In the last, on December 10 and 11, set a new world record of 8417 points. Now 31, Toomey has competed In 35 decathlon events in his career. Of the nine scores of more than 8200 points In the history of the event, six were set by Toomey. An Olympic champion, he concluded an all-con-quering year by marrying Miss M. Rand (England), an Olympic champion in 1964 and a former holder of the women’s world long jump record. Last season he Improved most of his performances. His best last season for
the Individual events were: 26ft Olin in the long jump, 47ft 2|ln in the shot 14J»ec in the 100 metres hurdles, 154 ft 2ln in the discus, 14ft o}in in the pole vault 225 ft Sin in the javelin, 10.3 sec in the 100 metres, 6ft 6}in in the high jump and 46.45ee In the 400 metres. He was unable to match his previous best of 4min 12.7 see for the 1500 metres.
