New Dental Cement

Another step has been taken to make a visit to the dentist less of an ordeal. A dental research worker at the University of Manchester, Dr. Dennis C. Smith, has developed a dental cement which Britain’s National Development Research Corporation has found so interesting that it has taken out patents. The corporation thinks the new cement will earn substantial royalties throughout the world, and interest has already been shown in Western Germany and the United States. Reporting in a 8.8. C. broadcast, Olga Illner recalled that dental cements are used for lining cavities under permanent filling materials, and for fixing crowns or bridges into position. Traditional types of cement of the zinc phosphate group tend to irritate the nerve of the tooth, particularly in deep cavities. The new cement, however, is not only completely non-irritant, it sets far more strongly than the traditional ones. It is known technically as zinc polyacrylate, and in Britain, the Amalgamated Dental Company is marketing it under the trade name “De Trey’s Poly-C”.
