Serious Assault On Hawera Youth

. (NZ. Press Association) HAWERA, Jan. 30. ' South Taranaki police are searching for two men believed to have been involved in a serious assault at Hawera about 11 o’clock last night. The victim of the assault, Frederick John Shaw,' a 23-year-old carpenter, was admitted to the Hawera Hospital and later transferred for emergency treatment to Wanganui Hospital, where his condition was reported to be fairly comfortable. Police said the injured man and two others were Seen in a Hawera cafe. They left together about 11 p.m. A few minutes later the injured man was taken to the Hawera Police Station badly hurt. He is believed to have two fractures of the jaw, deep facial lacerations, part of his lips missing, and most of his teeth broken. Police say that the assailants are described as both

European, about 19 years of age. They were believed to be in a mid-1950 model car.
