VACANCIES—PROFESSIONAL ®MIM® MOUNT IM MINES, LTD, invites applications for positions in OPERATIONS RESEARCH NT MOUNT ISA THE COMPANY has operations for Mining, Milling and Smelting of Copper and Lead-Zinc ores at Mount Isa. Current daily ore treatment is 16,000 tons. The M.I.M. group of companies includes subsidiaries in Townsville, Bowen and Brisbane. Opportunities exist for the application of most of the established O.R. techniques. In addition complex problems associated with underground mining demand the development of highly specialised solution techniques. Occasional travelling to other operations of the company in Australia will be necessary. SENIOR OPERATIONS RESEARCH ANALYST DUTIES: The successful applicant will be responsible for the activities of a team of O.R. analysts engaged in a wide range and variety of projects. QUALIFICATIONS: Tertiary qualifications with a strong emphasis on mathematics and statistics are required. Formal training in operations research would be an advantage. Applicants should have had at least five years’ operations research experience and three years’ supervisory experience. SALARY: Attractive commencing salary will be negotiated to suit qualifications and experience. In addition a bonus and prosperity loading of $1352 per annum will be paid. OPERATIONS RESEARCH ANALYSTS DUTIES: The completion of various operations research projects, which will involve mathematical modelling and computer simulation of plant processes, statistical analysis and mathematical programming. QUALIFICATIONS: Tertiary qualifications with a mathematical and/or statistical emphasis are required. Formal training in operations research would be an advantage. ALCOA OF AUSTRALIA, LIMITED, require a Systems Programmer for its Point Henry Works, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The Company is a rapidly growing joint Australian/ American organisation formed in 1961 to produce alumina, aluminium ingot, and semi-fabricated products from bauxite mined in Western Australia. Current expansion has created positions for Systems Pro-* grammers in the computer services division. INSTALLATION An IBM 1800 computer with 2311 disk drives is now operating. This computer is operated in a time sharing environment for commercial and scientific data processing and for process control. Two NOVA computers are to be installed this year. POSITION Real time management information systems in volving stores inventory, production scheduling, financial analysis and planning, payroll and other applications are now being implemented. The successful applicants will be required to maintain the computer’s multiprogramming operating system, design, write and install modifications to the language translators, 1/10 routines of any other part of the operating system and write and maintain general utility packages. QUALIFICATIONS A degree in mathematics, science or engineering with several years programming experience in FORTRAN and an assembly language. Qualifications desired: (a) Degree in Geology or Physics. Duties: Assist in running of concrete laboratory involved with applied research in field of concrete technology. Current research activities include studies of dynamic strength characteristics of rocks, evaluation of scoria as an aggregate for lightweight concrete, effect on concrete of additive compounds, degradation of roading basecourse materials and mix design for major New Zealand projects. or (b) Degree in Geology or Geophysics. Duties: to form the nucleus of a field investigation team which would be involved in three semi-rela-ted fields. (i) Engineering seismic surveys of sites for bridges, buildings, highways, etc; (ii) surveys of dams and other concrete structures using high frequency sonic equipment to determine condition and rate of deterioration of materials; (iii) develop techniques for measuring modes of vibration of multistorey structures. Considerable travelling would be involved. (c) Degree in Physics and Applied Maths or equivalent. Duties: carry out applied research in the wide field of building materials, covering metals, plastics, adhesives, paints, timber and building components. Testing of materials for fire resistance would also be a major aspect (d) Degree in Chemistry with Physics an advantage. Duties: assist in carrying out applied research into the physico/chemical behaviour of bituminous materials. In particular to study their rheological properties and relationship of these properties tothe performance in pavements.
