‘Excellent’ Antarctic Trip

Mrs Kay Lindsay, one of four United States women scientists who travelled to the Antarctic last November, returned to Christchurch last evening reporting “an excellent trip.”

Mrs Lindsay, Dr Lois Jones, who heads the team, Mrs Eileen McSaveney, and Miss Terry Lee Tickhill are all from Ohio State University, sity.

Mrs Lindsay said the trip had gone extremely well and their research programme had been carried out satisfactorily. Dr she said, had had been very pleased with the work done in the windswept Taylor and Wright valleys and had collected many valuable samples to bring back with her. Apart from one bad sandstorm in one of the dry valleys, the weather had been ideal for working and “roughing it was easy, really—just like an extended camping trip.”

The four women had camped out during most of their stay, but had used MeMurdo Station as a main base.

Helicopter Trouble They had been taken out to their camps by helicopter in many cases, Mrs Lindsay said, one of the the helicopters had to make a forced landing while Dr Jones was aboard. Another incident was some mechanical trouble with a helicopter, but none of the women were on board at the time.

Mrs Lindsay, who has returned five days ahead of her colleagues, said she had found it necessary to return early as she had to travel to Australia almost immediately. An Australian citizen, she will have to visit the United States Consul in Australia to arrange for an extension of her visa to return to America.
