"The Press" Special Service < PALMERSTON NORTH, 1 January 30. Not even the offer of 850,000, a brand-new car and a replica of his vintage model could part a Palmerston North vintage-car enthusiast from his Doble steam car. Mr B. T. Rankine, a 33-year-old technician at Massey University, reluctantly confirmed that he had re- , ceived the offer from America for his car. But he said he hod no intention of selling. The Besler Steam Corporation, the American
company which produced the original Dobles, is now owned by General Motors. The company to taking part in the project to develop a modern steam-driven car to combat air pollution. Mr Rankine said the offer to buy,the ear was only one of many he had received from buyers in the United States. The car, a 1923 Doble series El 3, was brought to Auckland from America in January, 1924, by Mr .Edwin Atkinson. New, it cost sls,ooo—three times the price of a Rolls-Royce at that time.
