NEW COURSE OFFERED
Tuition In Data! Processing Because of the general shortage of junior staff both in Government and private enterprise, a full-time course in electronic data processing will be held at the Christchurch Technical Institute this year for the first time. The head of the science, mathematics and general studies department of the institute (Mr J. D, A. Herctis) ! said on Wednesday that the course was designed to offer < in one year of full-time study, ' a second pre-vocational train- i ing for school-leavers who ; wished to take up a career in ■ organisations using electronic i data-processing systems. The course, which will be < similar to that which began i at the Auckland Technical 1 Institute three years ago, will ’ be limited to 10 students. Ap- I plicants must have at least < university entrance and must 1 pass an aptitude test. Only 1 the A ratings-from this test s will be accepted. 1 Mr Hercus said that about 1 half of those who had applied had been accepted, but i there were still a few vacan- I cies. Most of those already ; accepted were girls. t Mr Hercus said that about i 10 Christchurch firms and the ; University of Canterbury had < agreed to support the course. ; Several of the firms would j sponsor students, paying them < a bursary to attend the j course and guaranteeing - them a position at the end of the year.
