TROTTING Intrepid Stays On Best In New Brighton Cup
Intrepid made amends for a dismal showing in the Timaru Cup on January 17 when he outstayed a useful field in the New Brighton Cup at Addington Raceway last evening. After a race of changing fortunes, Intrepid beat Manaroa by a length and a quarter with Jacquinot Bay and the favourite, True Avenl, right up next.
Intrepid’s win earned hint a 2:10 assessment and he will now be eligible for the New Zealand Cup next November. In the meantime he will probably be prepared for the Easter Cup carnival in March.
Intrepid, a four-year-old gelding by Local Light from Idris, is trained at Halswell by M. L. Edwards, who races him in partnership with Mr C.- E. Hoy, of Christchurch.
Mr Hoy is a past-president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club and the honorary treasurer of the New Zealand Trotting Conference.
Manaroa, Friendly Forbes, and Wipe Out gave ground at the start. Jacquinot Bay led out, with Intrepid improving to take over after two furlongs. One furlong later True Averil was sent clear. The pace was fairly easy and A. M. Harrison sprinted Manaroa up to take control at the end of five furlongs.
Manaroa applied the pressure on the home turn and led to the straight from True Averil, with Intrepid, Lords, Jacquinot Bay, and Stylos showing up. True Averil was unable to produce much extra when he was pulled out and Intrepid then challenged further out He finished full of running and won easily by a length and a quarter. Manaroa was far from disgraced in second place, a nose in front of Jacquinot Bay, which finished strongly. True Averil was another nose
back fourth, four lengths in : front of Radiant Globe, with ' six lengths to Stylos, one of i those pushed back to the tail • of the field as positions changed in the middle stages. Wipe Out made ground for seventh. Our Smokey won his second
race at the meeting and completed the T.A.B. double when he outfinished Waratah to win the North Beach Handicap by three-quarters of a length. Our Smokey finished strongly from mid-field. Waratah, which was near the rear at
the half mile but improved quickly on the home turn, took second by half a neck from Rhinegolde, which ran on from the fourth line. Newport Maid ran on from midfield for fourth but was well beaten. Alandria led in the others.
