Hematite In N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. Hematite Petroleum (N.Z.), Ltd, a subsidiary of Australia’s giant Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Ltd, is among new companies registered in Wellington recently. It is an associate of another B.H.P. subsidiary, Hematite Petroleum Proprietary, Ltd, which is currently engaged in exploring and producing with Esso Exploration and Production Australia, Inc., over a wide area of Bass Strait. Esso and Hematite did Australia’s first offshore oil drilling in December, 1964, in the Gippsland Shelf Basin, off Victoria.
In 1967 they began a programme for the supply of natural gas from the Barracouta and Marlin fields to Melbourne. Oil production began last August. Hematite Petroleum (N.Z.) has a capital of ssm in 100 c shares, all of which, except two held by directors, have been allotted to B.H.P. The directors are Sir lan M. McLennan, Messrs J. C. McNeil, K. A. Rowell, and D. A. Wittner.
