Skaters On The March

Competitive roller skaters already have three outlets for their activites—speed and artistic skating, and roller hockey. This week-end they will be introduced to another branch of the sport—roller marching. The New Zealand champion roller marching team. Manurewa (Auckland), will end a national tour tonight at the Rollerdrome in Christchurch. It will give displays during a programme which will also include performances by Canterbury’s successful skaters at the recent national championships. Roller marching was established in New Zealand about 12 years ago, and has many devotees in Auckland. All the teams which took part in the national championships this year were from the Auckland area, but the manager of the Manurewa side (Mr P. Zainey) is keen to see roller marching spread throughout the country. “There are many children who are not in a position to develop skating in a specialised field, but roller marching offers them a chance to remain in the sport,“ he said.
