SOUTHDOWN RAM FAIR

Prices Up For Good Sheep

“The Press’ 1 Special Service INVERCARGILL, Jan. 19. Canterbury buyers and breeders were well represented at the twentieth annual stud Southdown Ram Fair at Invercargill today. . * Seventy rams were offered and 38 sold at auction for an average of 1327 on a market that was buoyant for good sheep but not interested in average types.

The average compared well with last year’s figure of 6246 and the 1968 level of $299.

The market was dominated by good rams from two southern studs—F. E. Holroyd’s Greenvale Stud, at Wright’s Bush and J. D. and W. T. Robertson s Merryvale Stud at Waikoikoi.

Mr Holroyd emerged with the top individual average for the fifth year in succession. His average after meeting the market for all seven rams offered was $496. The top Merryvale entry, however, took the highest price of the day—a bid of $lOOO for an Auckland buyer, E. J. Drake. N.M.A., Ltd, of Christchurch, bought a Greenvale ram at $9OO, second top price of the day, for N. E. Mclntosh, and another at $425 for M. Zuppecich. Other Canterbury buyers included G. Kane (Rangitata) from J. A. Ferguson, of Lumsden, at $375 and Braemar Farms (Timaru) from D. C. McMillan, of Irwell. at $2OO. The Canterbury breeders had mixed fortunes. A. D. Wyllie and Sons (Amberley) sold at $2OO to Hammond Bros (East Limehills). $175 to D. R. Richardson (Te Awamutu) and $3OO to B. B. Bryant (Nelson). D. C. McMillan (Irwell) sold at $2OO to Braemar Farms, Ltd (Timaru). J. C. Meddlicott and Sons (Waimate) sold at $250 to R. Cullen (Milton) and $2OO to J. Duncan (Ranfurly).
